Google Forms file upload limits, and how to raise them

Google Forms limits uploads in four places: files per question, size per file, the form's total, and your Drive storage. Here's each one, its maximum, and where to change it.

Raising the per-question limits

Click the File upload question in the editor. Its settings are right below the title:

  1. Allow only specific file types: switch it off to accept any file, or tick the groups you want.
  2. Maximum number of files: 1, 5 or 10. If you need more than 10 from one person, add a second upload question, or ask for a single ZIP file.
  3. Maximum file size: set it to the largest file you expect. Phone videos are often several hundred megabytes, so 1 GB is a safe choice for video.

Raising the total for the form

Under the upload question's settings Google shows how much the whole form can accept, with a link to change it. New forms start at 1 GB, which is about a hundred 10 MB files. Pick a larger total before you share the form widely; once the total is used up, respondents can't add more files until you raise it.

Running out of Drive storage

Every uploaded file is saved in your Drive, in a folder Google creates for the form, and counts toward your storage. If your account is full, uploads stop even if the form's own limits allow more. Move old responses' files elsewhere, delete what you no longer need, or add storage.

The limit you can't raise: the sign-in

None of these settings change who can upload. Respondents always need to be signed in to a Google account, and Google doesn't offer the question at all for forms in a shared drive. If that's the limit that's costing you responses, see how to accept files without a sign-in.

Formfile's limits, for comparison

Formfile adds uploads to your Google Form without a sign-in. Its limits are smaller than Google's on file size, so it fits documents, photos and short videos better than long recordings.

Programs and scripts (like .exe files) are always refused. Files from attempts that are never submitted are deleted after 24 hours and don't count. See pricing.

Common questions

What is the maximum file size for Google Forms uploads?

10 GB per file, if the form owner chooses it. The owner picks the limit for each File upload question: 1 MB, 10 MB, 100 MB, 1 GB or 10 GB.

How many files can someone upload to one Google Forms question?

Up to 10. The owner chooses 1, 5 or 10 files for each File upload question. For more, add another upload question.

How much can a Google Form receive in total?

New forms accept 1 GB of uploads in total. The owner can raise this, up to 1 TB, from the link under any File upload question.

Do uploads count against my Google storage?

Yes. Files are stored in the form owner's Google Drive and use the owner's storage. Free Google accounts come with 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail and Google Photos.

Can people upload without a Google account if the file is small?

No. The sign-in requirement applies to every File upload question, whatever the size limit.
